Kristan Akerman - Lens based digital artist
I studied graphic design at Swindon Art College and then worked for local advertising agencies and design studios before setting up a small graphic design company with a friend. Everything was cut and pasted on drawing boards using tools that would now be described as analogue. We bought a Mac and launched into the digital world in 1989.
I sold my share of the company and went traveling which included spells working for an Ad agency in Sydney and an entrepreneurial web design company in San Diego. I returned to the UK in 1996 where I spent time in London, Bristol and finally Brighton.
Throughout this period I shot lots of photographs and began to explore digital manipulation as a creative tool for my own work. My camera now goes everywhere with me and I use photographs as the raw materials for telling stories.
Brighton has been one of the main inspirations for creating the 'Long moments' series which I began in 2009.
I exhibited and sold work for the first time in January 2012, you can see more about my exhibitions and awards below.
